FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

SALARY (HOURLY): $15.00 MINIMUM

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

 

Exceptional Children's Teacher Assistant

Under limited supervision of the EC teacher and/or principal, provides support to the teacher in the instruction of eligible  students with disabilities. Performs tasks to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students with disabilities. Reports to the EC teacher and/or principal.

 

Bus Driver

Under general supervision, work performed, includes but is not limited to driving bus safely to destination and return; following school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes; and monitoring students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Teacher Assistant

Academic Assistance

Gives group instruction as prescribed by the EC  teacher.

  • Provides individualized instruction.
  • Demonstrates various instructional activities.
  • Monitors work assigned by the EC
  • Checks and corrects students' work while in progress.
  • Keeps students on task.
  • Praises and reinforces achievement of students.
  • Reports student progress to the EC
  • Implement & collect data of IEP/BIP services under the direction of EC teacher.

Instructional Preparation/Support

  • Arranges classroom furnishings and equipment.
  • Prepares visual aids.
  • Duplicates materials.
  • Reorganizes materials at the end of day.
  • Serves as proctor during testing.
  • Attends workshops.
  • Scores students' papers as instructed by EC teacher.
  • Distributes and collects instructional materials.

Daily Living/Functional Support

  • Assists students with toileting & handwashing (including diaper/pull-up & clothing changes).
  • Assists students with eating, while promoting independence and maintaining safety.
  • Assists students with maintaining appropriate hygiene.

Reports and Records

  • Records student behavior
  • Files data according to regulatory requirements
  • Assists teacher in filling out required paperwork

Monitoring Student Behavior

Supervises students in the classroom and other locations

  • Distributes awards for positive behavior
  • Promotes student self-esteem
  • Teaches citizenship, social skills and respect for others
  • Reconciles minor student conflicts
  • Participates in development of discipline policy
  • Disciplines misbehavior through approved methods
  • Reports discipline problems to EC teacher or principal
  • Reports to supervisor significant change or lack of change in student behavior

 

 Bus Driver

Drives bus safely to destination and return.  Conforms to traffic rules and regulations; makes vehicle pre-checks and records and reports malfunctions; follows school district regulations for handling vehicle breakdowns and accident incidents; and keeps the bus clean.

 

Follows school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes.  Picks up and drops off students at designated times and bus stops; ensures students depart the bus at their usual stops; and determines that all students leave the bus at both ends of the route.

 

Monitor students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.  Take suitable action to resolve incidents between/among students should such incidents occur and report inappropriate student behavior to school authorities as soon as possible.

 

Safety of Others. Considerable responsibility for the safe transportation of students.

 

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma
  • Minimum of 48 hours of college level coursework. A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required or WorkKeys Certification including Business Writing.
  • Two years of experience working with children preferred, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with parents, schools, community and district office personnel.
  • Must obtain a DHHS qualification letter.
  • Willingness to undergo further training as required.
  • Experience using the computer.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Participates in staff development workshops.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the DL/I teacher and/or principal.

 

Bus Driver

5 years of responsible driving experience. Completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course. Must be able to pass the required DOT Physical examination and have a DOT Drug Screen with negative results. Must be eligible to hold a Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Physical Requirements:

 

Must be physically able to lift and move objects related to the job functions. Physical demand requirements are for light work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable characteristics of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to students. Language Ability: Requires the ability to read forms and materials associated with the job functions. Proficiency in specific foreign language preferred.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately in using instructional objects.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color. Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Teacher Assistant

  • Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.
  • Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade levels to which employment assignment is made.
  • Some knowledge of the school organization and its community.
  • Some knowledge of expected behavior of children, that is, basic characteristics of ages and stages.
  • Skill necessary to operate audiovisual equipment and common office machines. ? Skill to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans.
  • Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective.
  • Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor. ? Ability to impart information to the child's level of comprehension.
  • Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward and punishment.
  • Ability to solve independently most minor problems.
  • Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision. ? Ability to record and store data accurately.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information

 

Bus Driver

  • Knowledge of driving laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of safe bus operations
  • Knowledge of vehicle pre-run checks and their performance
  • Maintain records of names and addresses of students, locations and times of stops, route information, and time sheets
  • Administrative skills to implement established policies and procedures regarding student transportation, enforcing rules of student conduct and discipline
  • Communication skills in dealing with students daily; communicating with parents regarding bus routes and discipline problems; and advising the transportation department of bus malfunctions
  • Leadership skills to maintain discipline on the bus
  • Manual skills to maintain bus cleanliness
  • Mechanical skills to detect bus malfunction
  • Planning skills to develop student seating arrangements
  • Common arithmetical function to count the number of students on the bus and to complete time
