BENEFITS STATUS: FULL-TIME

SALARY (MONTHLY): $2510-4120 

+ 4% LOCAL SUPPLEMENT




GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, performs all major and minor mechanical repairs to the school bus fleet and other school system vehicles.  Performs all levels of the preventative maintenance program.  Reports to the Transportation Director.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Diagnoses minor and frequently occurring mechanical problems. 
  • Rotates, aligns, and balances wheels. 
  • Installs shock absorbers. 
  • Repairs and replaces damaged vehicle body parts. 
  • Tests electrical systems and makes necessary repairs. 
  • Repairs ignition systems and electrical components. 
  • Checks and repairs doors and lifts. 
  • Removes, replaces fuel, oil, and water pumps; alternator and other parts of the engine and suspension system. 
  • Performs general maintenance as needed. 
  • Performs all levels of preventative maintenance and documents using proper forms.
  • Performs monthly and State inspections on school motor fleet.
  • Diagnose check engine light with a scanner or laptop.

 

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Makes wrecker calls as needed.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school with some technical training in automotive equipment and four years experience in repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to operate power tools and mechanical equipment.  Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently.  Must be able to move relatively heavy objects and perform manual labor for extended periods of time.  Physical demand requirements are for medium to heavy work.

 

Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics of things.

 

Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.  

 

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms.  Requires the ability to prepare time sheets.

 

Intelligence:  Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

 

Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.  Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.

 

Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

 

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

 

Motor Coordination:  Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using tools.

 

Manual Dexterity:  Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as equipment.  Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

 

Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.

 

Physical Communications:  Requires the ability to talk and hear.

 

Other:  Must have Class (A) CDL license and North Carolina Inspection license.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Ability to acquire skill in the performance of increasingly complex duties relating to the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of school bus and vehicles operation and maintenance.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the electrical and generating systems of automotive equipment. 
  • Skill to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement and vehicle body repair. 
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to physically perform most repairs.
