JOB TITLE: TECHNICIAN III/SHOP FOREMAN

SALARY (MONTHLY): $3117-3850
+ 5% LOCAL SUPPLEMENT
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The Technician III/Shop Foreman will perform complex duties in the operation, repair, and maintenance of the vehicles in the school transportation program. Most work is performed based on prior experience, troubleshooting, and using computer programs with problem codes. The employee is expected to resolve problems of medium difficulty with little assistance while others may be referred to a supervisor. Mechanical issues are expected to be resolved by the employee. The employee receives general supervision and work is occasionally reviewed while in progress. The employee also assists the Transportation Supervisor with all aspects of running the shop.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance inspections on vehicles.
- Perform major services on vehicles in accordance with the NC Fleet Maintenance Manual.
- Complete monthly inspection reports and service reports.
- Communicate with other stakeholders involved with transportation services including bus drivers, administrators, and vendors.
- Perform other duties as assigned and accept responsibilities thereof.
- Work with other stakeholders while on the scene of a bus accident.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Makes wrecker calls as needed.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Must be School Bus Inspector Certified or have the ability to become certified within six months of employment.
- Must have the appropriate NC Driver’s License for the weight and type of vehicles operated and the appropriate endorsements, as required by the Department of Transportation, Division of Motor Vehicles. (Minimum license is a CDL class B with the following endorsements P-passenger, and S-school bus).
- Four years experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, or two years technical training in the automotive field.
- Experience working on diesel engines is preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate power tools and mechanical equipment. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 100 pounds of force frequently. Must be able to move relatively heavy objects and perform manual labor for extended periods of time. Physical demand requirements are for medium to heavy work. Some repairs and inspections are conducted on bus parking lots in various weather conditions.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using tools.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of school bus and vehicle operation and maintenance.
- Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines and other mechanical components of school buses and service vehicles.
- Considerable knowledge of the tools and equipment used in automotive repair shops.
- Considerable knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the electrical and generating systems of automotive equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical, heating, and air condition problems.
- Ability to determine appropriate methods to repair improperly operating automotive equipment.
- Ability to comprehend and apply NC Inspection Law.
- Skill to physically perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, and vehicle body repair.
- Ability to read and comprehend technical materials and manuals.
